Research recently published in Onside’s 2025 Generation Isolation Report highlights growing numbers of young people aged between 11-18 are relying on AI chatbots for support, connection and guidance in their lives.
Salford Youth Zone’s Senior members joined with ITV Granada Reports to share their own views on the findings for an episode of their From the North podcast series.
Three of our young people – Ellen (14), James (15) and Tajala (17) – sat down with presenter Gamal Fahnbulleh for an insightful discussion into their own experiences of AI.
From supporting time management to essay structure, they highlighted how AI can become a key tool for young people, helping them navigate an increasingly fast-paced world where efficiency has become essential.
Ethical concerns around usage and dependence were equally considered, particularly exploring the dangers of using AI systems for advice that are designed to continually agree with us.
With younger ages turning to AI regularly for guidance, our Seniors reinforced the importance of ensuring there is a balance in using its support alongside other resources, including credible sources, peer discussion and trusted advice from adults.
